The Wilis are the ghostly spirits of maidens betrayed by their lovers before they died. Many were abandoned on their wedding days, and all died of broken hearts. They, led by their merciless queen, Myrtha, dance and haunt the forest at night to exact their revenge on any man they encounter, regardless of who he may be, forcing their victims to dance until they die of exhaustion.

Nothing much is known about Myrtha before she became a Wili. Since she did become one, however, it can be gathered that she must have had a lover before her death, who betrayed her, and that she either died before her wedding day or during it. In my interpretation, she died of a broken heart on the day of her wedding, because her lover didn't turn up at the altar. In death, she rose as a Wili, a vengeful spirit out to punish all men for the wrong done to her in life. Since then, she has become the "Queen of the Wilis", most likely helping the younger sprites arriving in death and finding their feet in their new ghostly form. She serves as the opposite of Giselle who is forgiving and kind, where Myrtha is portrayed as cruel, merciless and vindictive.
